The 1-800 number that wasn't
October 2024. A holder in Phoenix searches Google for "Binance US support phone" because the app's 2FA reset flow is stuck. The top result is a sponsored ad — looks official, includes the Binance logo, links to a clean landing page with a phone number. He calls.
The voice on the other end is calm, American-accented, asks for his email and the last four digits of his SSN, then walks him through "verifying" his account by reading back the contents of his Authenticator app. By the time he hangs up, 2.3 BTC are gone.
Why this works
Binance US does not publish a customer-support phone number. Neither does Coinbase. Neither does Kraken. The only channel is the in-app ticket. Scammers buy Google Ads targeting "binance support phone" and "coinbase phone number" because the search intent is high — people only look up support phones when they are already stressed.
The four red flags
- Any phone number for a US crypto exchange is fake. SEC-registered exchanges in the US deliberately do not run phone support — it is the single highest-friction vector for social engineering.
- "Read me your 2FA code" is the kill shot. A real support agent has zero need for your TOTP code. The moment those six digits leave your mouth, your account is being logged into in real time.
- Sponsored Google ads for support are 60–80% scam. A 2024 Consumer Reports test found 64% of "crypto support" sponsored ads led to phishing pages. Always click the organic result.
- "We need to verify by sharing your screen." AnyDesk and TeamViewer are the second half of this attack. Never install remote-access software on the same device that holds wallet apps.
The recovery script
If you gave them the TOTP code: open the Binance US app, go to Security, regenerate 2FA, change password, withdraw to a fresh wallet you control. Do it in that order, within 15 minutes. Then file with IC3 and your state attorney general. If the drainer routed through a US-licensed exchange (it usually does, for the off-ramp), there is a small but real chance of freeze if you act fast enough.
How I find real support
I log into the app or website directly — typed URL, not search — and use the in-app "Contact us" button. Every time. The five extra seconds is the entire defense.
