Short answer
Exchange fee tiers are a critical cost variable for active US holders — at retail tiers (Coinbase tier 0, Binance.US tier 0) you pay 0.5-1.5% per trade; at top tiers (after $1M monthly volume) you pay 0.1% or less. Most US retail holders are dramatically overpaying on fees because they trade on the default tier of a high-fee exchange. The single most effective fee optimization for a non-institutional user is moving from Coinbase (high default) to Kraken Pro or Gemini ActiveTrader (better default tiers), or to Binance.US for spot trading where available.
The tier structure on major US exchanges
Coinbase Advanced. Tier 0 (under $10K monthly volume): 0.40% maker, 0.60% taker. Tier 1 ($10K-50K): 0.25%/0.40%. Tier 5 ($1M+): 0.08%/0.18%. Most retail users sit on Tier 0-1.
Coinbase (non-Advanced/Simple). The "regular" Coinbase interface charges 1.49% per transaction plus a spread of 0.5%-2%. Effective cost: 2-3% per trade. Far above any other US-regulated exchange.
Kraken Pro. Default: 0.16% maker, 0.26% taker. Much more retail-friendly than Coinbase Advanced. Tier 1 ($50K monthly): 0.14%/0.24%.
Gemini ActiveTrader. Default: 0.20% maker, 0.40% taker. Competitive with Kraken Pro. Has VIP tier discounts for high-volume.
Binance.US. Default: 0.10% maker, 0.10% taker for spot trading where available. Lowest of US-regulated exchanges. Limited product selection.
Hidden fees beyond the headline tier
Spread. The bid-ask spread is a hidden cost. Tight markets (BTC/USD on Coinbase Pro) have $1-3 spread on a $50K trade — negligible. Thin markets (small-cap altcoins) have spreads of 0.5%-3% that compound the explicit fee.
Withdrawal fees. Coinbase charges variable BTC/ETH withdrawal fees. Kraken Pro publishes flat rates. For frequent withdrawers, this adds up — calculate annual withdrawal cost when choosing.
ACH delays. Free ACH costs 3-5 business days. Paying $25 for a same-day wire might be worth it depending on price volatility.
Practical recommendation
For US holders trading >$5K per month: use Coinbase Advanced (not regular Coinbase), Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader, or Binance.US. The 1-2% savings vs default Coinbase compounds rapidly.
For long-term holders trading rarely: fee tier matters less. Focus on security (Passkey, withdrawal allowlist, hardware wallet) over fee optimization.
